Taking the first step toward therapy can feel overwhelming. If you've never participated in equine-assisted psychotherapy before, you may be wondering what to expect, whether you'll need to ride a horse, or even if you need any horse experience at all.

At Brave Ground Equine Therapy, we understand that trying something new can bring up uncertainty. Our goal is to create an environment where you feel welcomed, supported, and safe from the moment you arrive.

Before You Arrive

After scheduling your appointment, you'll complete any necessary intake paperwork and discuss your goals with your therapist. This helps us understand your unique needs and begin developing a treatment plan that supports your journey.

There is no need to purchase special equipment or have any experience with horses. We simply recommend wearing comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes appropriate for spending time outdoors.

Meeting Your Therapist

When you arrive, you'll be greeted by your licensed mental health therapist, who will spend time getting to know you and answering any questions you may have.

At Brave Ground, every session is facilitated by a licensed mental health professional who is experienced in working with horses. This allows us to prioritize both emotional and physical safety while creating a therapeutic experience tailored to your individual needs.

Meeting the Horses

One of the most common questions we hear is:

"What if I'm nervous around horses?"

The answer is simple: that's okay.

Many clients have little or no experience with horses. Our herd has been carefully selected for therapeutic work, and your therapist will introduce you to the horses at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

There is never any expectation that you will interact with a horse before you're ready.

Do I Have to Ride?

No.

This is one of the biggest misconceptions about equine-assisted psychotherapy.

Most sessions take place entirely on the ground. Depending on your treatment goals, you may participate in activities such as:

  • Observing horse behavior

  • Grooming

  • Leading a horse

  • Practicing communication skills

  • Solving challenges alongside a horse

  • Mindfulness and grounding exercises

  • Reflective conversations with your therapist

These experiences create opportunities to explore thoughts, emotions, relationships, and behaviors in ways that often feel different from a traditional office setting.

Every Session Is Different

No two sessions look exactly alike.

Your therapist will tailor each appointment to your individual goals, whether you're working through anxiety, trauma, depression, grief, ADHD, life transitions, relationship concerns, or building confidence and emotional regulation.

Sometimes the most meaningful moments happen during quiet interactions with a horse. Other times, they occur while navigating a challenge together. Your therapist will help you process these experiences and connect them to your everyday life.

Why Horses?

Horses are naturally aware of the world around them and communicate primarily through body language. Because of this, they often respond honestly and authentically to what is happening in the present moment.

Their unique ability to provide immediate, nonjudgmental feedback can help clients develop greater self-awareness, improve communication, strengthen emotional regulation, and build confidence in ways that traditional therapy alone may not always provide.

Your Safety Comes First

Safety is at the heart of everything we do.

Our therapists are trained to work alongside horses, and every interaction is carefully planned with your emotional and physical well-being in mind. Activities are adapted to your comfort level, abilities, and treatment goals, and you will never be asked to participate in anything that feels unsafe or outside your level of comfort.

Beginning Your Journey

Starting therapy takes courage. Choosing equine-assisted psychotherapy doesn't mean you need to know anything about horses. It simply means you're open to experiencing healing in a different way.

At Brave Ground Equine Therapy, we believe healing happens through connection, to ourselves, to others, and to the world around us. Whether you're taking your first step toward therapy or looking for a new approach to personal growth, we're honored to walk alongside you on your journey.

We look forward to welcoming you to Brave Ground!
